Cash has received a great deal of good press lately and, as underscored by a number of our Terms of Reference Podcast guests, appears to be a solid option for delivering effective assistance, efficiently. Adding to the evidence is a randomized controlled trial by Princeton researchers, which suggest Cash transfers can positively effect “economic outcomes” (household spending and food security included) as well as “psychological wellbeing.”
What needs to happen for cash to become the new normal? It involves supporting infrastructure, cultural and norm acceptance, low enough barriers of entry, learning curves. Last but not least, a minimum degree of financial muscle.
