A few years ago I ran across photographer Tim Hetherington, who had – with writer Sebastian Junger – just released the documentary film Restrepo. [Junger has just released a related documentary, Korengal.]
Tim told me he was interested in telling stories in a wide range of ways, and I proposed we work together to make comics from some of the still photographs he had shot in Afghanistan. Just for fun, I pulled together a comic (above) about Liberia from some photographs Tim had shot in that country.
A few weeks later, Tim was killed in Libya, covering the civil war in April 2011, and of course our Afghanistan collaboration never went ahead.
