The current India IT explosion, which the latest figures set at 7.5% of the national GDP, was about twenty years in the making. It involved the government, the local industry and universities. Today, it employs close to 3 million people, with estimates nearing 9 million indirectly. IBM is looking, by themselves, to train 25 million Africans in the next 5 years.
Reported by Bloomberg, IBM will invest USD 70MM in South Africa, with similar actions following in Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco and Kenya. The IBM Africa Skills Academy will consist of a “free cloud-based platform” featuring basic to high-end computer and app development skills.
